There are over 50 wine producers across the south, but not all have cellar doors, and many keep seasonal hours. This guide focuses on experience quality, drive time, and ease of visit — our suggestions for making the most of a winery day from Breath.
For a memorable outing, we recommend anchoring your day around one destination winery for lunch — such as Frogmore Creek, Derwent Estate, or Bangor — then weaving in a boutique cellar door or two for the afternoon. Tasmania's wine regions are compact, scenic, and wonderfully uncrowded. From mountain forests to vineyard lunches and coastal views, some of the south's best experiences are just a short drive from your cabin.

Many cellar doors in Tasmania operate seated tastings with limited capacity. We strongly recommend booking ahead, particularly for weekends and lunch sittings, to avoid missing out on a table or tasting experience. Most wineries can be booked directly via their website.
Pooley Wines
Richmond, Coal River Valley
One of Tasmania's most acclaimed family estates, now in its third generation. Pooley was named Halliday Wine Companion's Winery of the Year in 2023, a fitting tribute to decades of commitment to sense of place. The cellar door sits within a heritage-listed Georgian sandstone Coach House at Butcher's Hill, surrounded by vines on the outskirts of historic Richmond. It's a tasting experience that feels genuinely earned.
Best known for: Pinot Noir (including a legendary 99-point Jack Dennis Pooley), Riesling, and Chardonnay — Tasmania's finest expression of all three. Bookings are essential for the hosted structured tastings. Also Tasmania's first fully accredited environmentally certified sustainable vineyard.

Pressing Matters

A specialist producer with a national reputation, Pressing Matters has been crafting premium Tasmanian wine since 2006.
